Websites For Plumbers: How Can a Better Website Generate You More Leads?

You might think word of mouth is the best way to get new jobs. And sure, it can be strong. But it’s not something you should be relying on. Word of mouth can dry up quickly, and if you’re just starting out, it can take years to build.

The most reliable way to get leads is through your website. There are people within 15 minutes of your front door searching for a plumber right now. If you’ve got the right website in place, those people can find you and get in touch. But how do you actually do that?

How plumbers should be treating Google

Think of Google like your mate who always knows someone. Someone asks, “Know any good plumbers around here?” and Google wants to give the best answer. That’s what you need to be, the best answer.

When someone searches “plumbers near me”, Google wants to show them someone local, reliable, and relevant. That means your website needs to make it clear who you are and where you work. The way you do that? Put the right words on your site and build the damn thing well.

Here’s what we do with our plumbing clients. First, we get a map and draw a ring around the area you want to work in. Then we list all the towns, villages, and cities inside that ring. We focus on places with 5,000 to 30,000 residents, big enough to bring leads, but small enough to stand out properly.

Next, we make location pages. Each one has a title “Plumber in {location}” and includes that phrase in the page description and copy. Google sees this and knows exactly what you do and where you do it. We add the right heading tags, write proper content, and then let Google work its magic.

Traffic is one thing, now you need the enquiry

Getting someone to click on your website is great, but that’s only half the battle. Now we need them to actually get in touch. This is where design and performance matter. If your site looks dated, loads slowly, or is hard to use, people will click off. Fast. 60% of people won’t wait more than 3 seconds for a website to load.

Run your site through Google Pagespeed Insights and check your scores. If your “Largest Contentful Paint” is more than 3 seconds, or your “Performance” score is under 90, you’ve got a slow site. And that’s not just bad for users, it's bad for your Google rankings too.

Next, look at your website and ask yourself, “Would I trust this person that I don't know to fix my toilet?” If the answer’s no, it’s time for a redesign.

Here’s a simple structure we recommend:

  • A homepage that clearly says who you are, where you work, and what you do
  • An About page with a photo of you or your team, helping customers connect with the person behind the business. Remember, you're going into their homes, so they need to trust you.
  • A Services page listing what you offer, with bonus points for a separate page for each service you offer.
  • A Gallery with Testimonials page to show off past work and share happy customer reviews
  • A Contact page with a simple form and clear contact info, make it easy for someone to get in touch

Your website is a tool. If it’s not bringing in leads, it’s not doing its job.

If I create a website as a plumber, how long will it take to see leads?

We usually expect websites to take around 6 months to really hit their stride. That’s when the pages you’ve built start climbing the Google rankings and bringing in consistent enquiries.

But here’s the catch, Google wants fresh content. If your website hasn’t changed in years, Google might assume you’re not active anymore.

How much should I pay for a website as a plumber?

Good question. If you want something done properly, expect to pay around £3000 for a custom-built website. As soon as someone offers to do it cheaper, they’re likely cutting corners which is going to cause a bigger pain in the arse further down the line.

You might save money upfront, but you’ll pay for it in lost leads and wasted time. We’ve seen it happen too many times.

How much would we charge for a website for a plumber?

We know £3000 is a big upfront cost, especially when you’ve got other tools, stock and costs to cover. That’s why we do things differently. You could also opt to do things yourself, which might save money, but at what cost.
